New Affordable Apartments Opening Soon

Community Development Corporation of Long Island (CDCLI) and Conifer Realty, LLC are pleased to announce that Copiague Commons, located at 54 Railroad Avenue in Copiague, has begun taking applications. A lottery will be held on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at 11:30am at the Babylon Town Hall (200 E. Sunrise Highway, Lindenhurst, NY 11757) to select applicants for the one and two bedroom apartments. The Community is under construction, expected to open this summer. An interim leasing office has been established at Cathedral Place Apartments, located at 1020 Prospect Avenue, Westbury, NY 11590.

Copiague Commons will feature 90 energy efficient apartment homes serving families earning up to 100% of Suffolk County’s area median income (AMI). Copiague Commons would not be possible without the groundwork laid by the local community and Town of Babylon through the Copiague visioning process that resulted in the Downtown Copiague Zoning District. This local effort sets the stage for a comprehensive revitalization of Copiague and allowed Copiague Commons to become a reality.

Two 45-unit apartment buildings sit directly across from the Long Island Rail Road Station (LIRR) offering residents a superb location in addition to its many amenities. One and two bedroom units offer affordable rents ranging from $1,193-$1,850 per month, and include a spacious and furnished clubhouse with kitchenette, access to the community plaza, on-site laundry facilities, fully equipped fitness center, professional on-site management, and improved streetscape on Railroad Avenue.

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer said “I am happy to see this housing progressing so nicely and in accordance with Copiague’s visioning process. An eyesore has been removed, and a vibrant new use has been introduced at the center of the community. I encourage all families in need of rental housing to submit an application for one of these beautiful new apartments.”

Marianne Garvin, President and CEO of CDCLI said “The development of Copiague Commons has taken years to plan and construct, and it is exciting to see it so near to completion.  We are pleased to continue our successful partnership with Conifer LLC, in addressing the need for high quality affordable rental housing. I thank the leaders from the Copiague community, Babylon Town and Suffolk County for their unwavering support. As a Vision Long Island Smart Growth Award winner, we hope this beautiful development inspires additional economic development in the Copiague downtown. This will be a fabulous place to live and we look forward to having many people apply to be residents of Copiague Commons.”

Arthur Krauer, Senior Project Director of Conifer, said, “CDCLI, as the affordable housing leader on Long Island, understands the critical need for transit-oriented development. Less time commuting and more time with family and friends.” He added, “Conifer, in continued partnership with CDCLI, developed Copiague Commons, 90 units of workforce housing that do exactly that.”
