Housing Choice Voucher Program Opportunities – Tenant Information

Housing Choice Voucher Program

The Housing Choice Voucher program (often referred to as Section 8) assists low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. The participant is free to choose any housing that meets the requirements of the program, including single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments, and is not limited to units located in subsidized housing projects. Once tenant and landlord sign a lease, the tenant family is responsible for 30% of their rent depending on their income, and the HCV program pays the remainder directly to the landlord.

CDCLI is the Suffolk County Local Administrator for the New York State Homes & Community Renewal (HCR) Housing Choice Voucher program.

Mainstream

CDCLI has been designated as a Public Housing Agency (PHA) by HUD in order to administer the Mainstream for Persons with Disabilities Housing Choice Voucher Program, in which vouchers assist non-elderly persons with disabilities. Aside from serving a special population, Mainstream vouchers are administered using the same rules as other housing choice vouchers.

Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing

CDCLI administers VASH vouchers, which combines the HCV program for homeless Veterans with case management and clinical services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)

For all programs, CDCLI oversees tenant eligibility, lease-up, annual recertification, and Housing Quality Standards inspections of all units. CDCLI is committed to the highest quality service provision to all its tenants and landlords on behalf of all its partner organizations.

The waiting list is currently closed for all HCV programs. When CDCLI is able to accept new applications, we conduct extensive outreach so the public is made aware of the opportunity, including notice on our website.
