Family Self Sufficiency
The Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program is a voluntary program that assists individuals and families who are receiving Housing Choice Voucher rental assistance to secure the resources they need to achieve economic self-sufficiency.
Case Managers meet regularly with participants to establish/review goals. Families are provided with many resources, including information about scholarships for college and job training programs, budgeting and credit skills, health care services, and counseling. These services may help families eliminate barriers to financial stablility and increase their self esteem.
During FSS Program participation, as a participant increase his or her earned income and the family's rent is increased as a result, money is set aside in an "escrow" account. When the participant achieves his or her goals and graduates from the FSS Program, they are provided with the money from this account. Many have expressed the desire to own a home and may use this money to achieve that dream.
Check out what participants have to say about the program:"The FSS Program is an outstanding program! I am very grateful for this opportunity. I would especially like to thank my Case Manager, Susan, for her dedication, knowledge, time, compassion, and great listening skills. She believed in me when I didn't want to believe in myself. I needed that. She has taught me a lot throughout these last few years and I believe this was a team effort on our completion of the program. I am now ready to achieve economic self-sufficiency." - Shena, August 2015 graduate
"FSS is a program that I'd highly recommend to anyone! I had the pleasure of having two FSS Case Managers (Debra and Kara), who are very passionate about their positions and offering resources that are otherwise unknown. The program helps to elevate families so they can thrive independently while setting realistic life goals. With the help of FSS, I've improved my financial readiness and obtained certifications that will advance my professional career. Thank you FSS!" - Shinita, November 2015 graduate
"I am an FSS graduate and very proud to be, but none of this would have happened for me if not for the mentoring of my Case Manager, Julia. I met Julia back in 2010, and through her constant support and great advice, I was able to accomplish a lot of things that has set me off on my journey. When I began in the FSS Program, I was ready for a new start in my life and through the years with hard work and motivation, a lot of ups and downs, I am happy with the life that I am living today. I have a full time job with benefits, my kids are healthy and strong, and we are still striving for even brighter days to come. I just want to say thank you for the opportunity. FSS has been good to me." - Taretha, October 2015 graduate
