Weatherization Assistance Program

The Weatherization Assistance Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and administered through the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal Energy Services Bureau.

A free program provided to low-income Long Islanders, especially the elderly and disabled, to make their homes more energy efficient.

CDC has managed the program for the State of New York since the late 1980's, currently serving over 600 households on an annual basis in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The goal of the Weatherization Assistance Program is to make the homes of low-income Long Islanders, especially the elderly and disabled, more energy efficient. An energy audit is conducted by an inspector, using a variety of tests and tools, to determine the most cost-effective means of reducing energy consumption in the dwelling.

CDC And United Way Provide Upgrades to Federation of Organizations

Thanks to the efforts of the Community Development Corporation of Long Island (CDC) and United Way of Long Island, improvements were made to six Federation-owned properties that are home to several residents.  All of the upgrades were designed to provide weatherization-related enhancements to the buildings.  Work on the three Suffolk County properties was administered by CDC, and the changes to the three Nassau County properties were administered by United Way.  Improvements include replacing windows, providing new weather stripping and insulation, improving venting and exhaust systems, wrapping pipes and even replacing the boiler in one house.

The weatherization services were provided as part of the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP).  WAP is funded by the United States Department of Energy and administered in New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal.  The total value of the upgrades received was more than $47,000! Federation of Organizations is grateful to United Way and the CDC for the time and effort devoted to this project and the improvements to our residents’ homes.
